Interior Design Central = 2009 ASID Newsletter of the Year!
HCC's own Interior Design Central Newsletter was selected as the winner of the 2009 ASID National Student Chapter Newsletter of the Year Award. Our newsletter proved to be the best of the best of all student chapter newsletters from around the country!

HCC "Mulligan Chair" draws Highest Bid at ASID Golf Classic
On April 16th, the ASID TX Gulf Coast Chapter hosted the 2009 Golf Classic at Wildcat Golf Club in Houston. This event featured a student "Mulligan Chair" design competition, with the criteria being a maximum expense of $50 to refurbish a chair for auction. (A "Mulligan" in golf is a do-over). Four area schools, including The Art Institute and our very own Houston Community College, submitted chairs. After the 3 other chairs were auctioned off, with the Art Institute's "Bonded Wasilly Chair" drawing a final bid of $235... HCC's "Take a Mulligan" golf-themed chair was sold for a whopping $315!!
Congratulations to the ladies who worked on this chair- Ariana Smetana, Becky Demetriou, Amanda Lopez, Kimberly Spyker (all pictured left) and Mona Draper, as well as Dennis McNabb for his creative assistance. You've made us proud!
HCC Student Wins IIDA Product Runway Student Competition
The local IIDA Chapter recently sponsored an event they called, Product Runway, featuring clothing made from items used in interior design- upholstery fabrics, samples, formica, etc. The constestants displayed their designs on models who strutted the catwalk to show off their garments. Congratulations to HCC's Rachel Mancill, who created a beautiful garment (seen right) that was awarded the best student design. Great work, Rachel!
A vintage 1960's smoking jacket provides the foundation for this 95% recycled garment, along with rich satins, velvets, and jazzy upholstery fabrics. The garment is also detailed with glass beading, hand painting, applique, and a number of embroidered edge finishes. Beautiful!

HCC Student wins ASID Portfolio Contest!
Houston Community College interior design student Harshada Jashwant was the winner of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) 2009 portfolio contest held at the recent ASID/Texas Gulf Coast Chapter student career day. Out of all of the students present from local interior design programs, Harshada was the grand prize winner.
Congratulations, Harshada!
